“الماضي شبح ، والمستقبل حلم ، وكل ما لدينا هو الآن.

The past is a ghost, the future a dream, and all we ever have is now.” Naguib Mahfouz

As I reminisce about my time in Egypt, sitting in my Paris apartment and gazing at the city lights, the memories of that fascinating country come rushing back. It feels like a lifetime ago, and yet the vivid recollections still resonate within me.

I recall the moment I disembarked the plane at Cairo International Airport, instantly greeted by the scorching heat and the bustling chaos of the city. The initial mixture of confusion and excitement enveloped me as I navigated through the throngs of people.

During my stay, Egypt became my home away from home, a land where contradictions coexist, and ancient history intertwines with modern chaos, creating a captivating whirlwind of sensations. One of the most awe-inspiring experiences was witnessing the majestic Pyramids of Giza. Standing in front of those colossal structures, I was overcome with a sense of wonder and reverence. The sheer magnitude of their construction and the mysteries they hold were truly mesmerizing.

Majestic and timeless, the Great Pyramid of Khufu stands tall as a testament to ancient Egyptian ingenuity. Constructed over 4,500 years ago, this colossal structure in Giza, Egypt, captivates with its grandeur and precise engineering. A true marvel of human history, it serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of the pharaohs.

Delving into Cairo’s rich cultural tapestry, I embarked on a visit to Coptic Cairo, a historic area brimming with religious significance. Exploring the ancient churches and winding streets, I immersed myself in the vibrant history of Christianity in Egypt. The highlight of my visit was the Hanging Church, also known as the Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, a breathtaking symbol of Coptic Christianity. Its architectural splendor and spiritual aura left me in awe as I marveled at the intricately designed icons and ancient artifacts within its hallowed walls.

Additionally, my exploration of Cairo led me to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, where I delved into the captivating heritage of ancient Egypt. The museum’s extensive collection showcased a myriad of artifacts, each holding a story of its own. From intricately carved statues of pharaohs and gods to beautifully preserved burial treasures, the museum offered a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Egyptian civilization. One particular artifact that captured my attention was the stunning golden mask of Tutankhamun, a masterpiece of ancient artistry that radiated a sense of timeless beauty.

While I didn’t venture to Luxor during my time in Egypt, I found ample opportunities to revel in the unique charm of Cairo. The bustling streets of Khan el-Khalili and downtown Cairo became my playground during the evenings. The city truly came alive after dark, as people spilled onto the streets, indulging in shopping, dining, and socializing. The electrifying energy was infectious, and I became swept up in the vibrant atmosphere.

Living in a foreign land certainly presented its challenges. The language barrier loomed large, and navigating the cultural differences felt like walking a tightrope. A single misstep could lead to confusion and frustration. However, the warmth and hospitality of some Egyptian people were ever-present, making me feel welcome and embraced. It was considered impolite to decline offers of food or drink, and I learned to accept these gestures with grace and gratitude. One of the biggest cultural differences I encountered was the concept of time. In Egypt, time seems to move at a different pace. Appointments are often more like suggestions than firm commitments, and it took me a while to get used to this more relaxed approach to timekeeping.

During my stay, I had the privilege of experiencing the holy month of Ramadan. The streets buzzed with activities as families gathered to break their fasts with delicious meals and sweet treats. The strong sense of community was palpable, and I felt honored to be included in these joyous celebrations. As night fell, the city transformed into a haven of peace and tranquility. The echoes of prayer filled the air, fostering a unique atmosphere that left a lasting impression.

Transportation in Cairo was an adventure in itself, with cars gracefully weaving through lanes like dancers in a frenzied ballet. Once I grasped the rhythm, getting around became easier than I had anticipated. Taxis were abundant and affordable, while the metro system provided a reliable and efficient mode of transportation.

Ah, the culinary delights of Egypt! From savoring delectable falafel sandwiches from street vendors to indulging in exquisite seafood dishes at high-end restaurants, my taste buds were in a constant state of bliss. I had the pleasure of dining with local families, who welcomed me with open arms and introduced me to traditional Egyptian dishes like koshari and molokhia. While koshari didn’t quite meet my expectations, I found solace in the flavors of Lebanon and Syria, with numerous outdoor restaurants run by expats from these countries.

The nights in Cairo were a feast for the senses, offering an array of entertainment options. I witnessed mesmerizing belly dancing shows that showcased the country’s rich cultural heritage. Cairo truly lived up to its reputation as a city that never sleeps, ensuring that there was always something to see or do, regardless of the hour.

Now that I’m back in Paris, a wave of nostalgia washes over me as I reflect on my time in Egypt. It was a bittersweet experience, with moments of frustration and confusion. However, the incredible memories and experiences far outweighed any challenges I faced. Egypt left an indelible mark on my heart, and I will forever cherish the enchantment and beauty I encountered during my journey.
